How to choose anchor, sandbag or water-filled sandbag?

2026-10-12

Many clients have one question:How to fix the inflatable castle/slide/obstacle course…And how to choose the fix part?Anchor, sandbag or water-filled sandbag? Both EN 14960 and ASTM F2374 treat anchoring as a calculated load case rather than as an accessory. Actually it depends on three factors: 1)The ground substrate to be anchored to. 2) The exposure area (open field, walled courtyard, beach, indoor hall). 3)The design wind speed you commit to for operation. For a full range of outdoor-safe models, first see our Inflatable Castle collection.

A/  The ground substrate to be anchored to.

Ground stakes are the default choice for grass, compacted soil, and most outdoor festival sites.Drive them in at roughly a 45-degree angle, tilting away from the inflatable device, and run the strap over the bend so that the load drives the stake into the soil rather than prying it out.  For a typical commercial inflatable bouncer on a school lawn, four stakes per corner driven at the rated angle are sufficient to meet the EN 14960 load case with a margin to spare. For school events, our 【HJC018 grey beige bouncer for school events】 and 【HJC029 Super Mario Castle】 are popular choices, while a 【HJC025 colorful bouncer for outdoor use】 works well for festivals. On softer or sandy ground, you either switch to ballast or supplement the stakes with helical ground anchors.

B/ The exposure area (open field, walled courtyard, beach, indoor hall)

Once the surface hardens, anchors no longer work. The rule of thumb most operators use is: for small equipment at 25 mph wind speed, one 50 lb / 23 kg sandbag for every 30 lb of calculated wind force, increasing linearly with windward area and design wind speed. For a medium bouncer with roughly 80 square feet of windward face, this calculation typically yields a starting quantity of four sandbags per corner anchor point. Larger units like the [HJC022 large Universe Bouncer], [HJC020 Frozen Combo], or [HJC021 Minions Combo] may require six to eight sandbags per corner, while a [HJC017 black combo] is often used for brand events with high wind exposure.

C/ Water ballast bags — open water area and pool installations

Stakes cannot work in the water, and sandbags cannot float, so some equipment placed on a pool, lake, or wet sand at the tide line, choose water ballast. The principle is simple: heavy-duty water bladders, typically 200–500 liters / 50–130 gallons, filled on site with a hose or pumped from the surrounding water body, then lashed to the equipment’s anchor points or perimeter mooring lines. For waterfront weddings and parties, the [HJC028 pink wedding bouncer] and [HJC026 pink purple bouncer] are ideal, while the [HJC027 Super Hero Combination] suits larger poolside events.
